My First Day in Santa Fe

Hi everyone. Well, Santa Fe is a very interesting place. The traffic is kaotic. There are no stop signs at all, occasionally a traffic light but no one pays much attention to it anyways. It seems to work on some sort of 4-way stop procedure except you'll be stopped and everyone else will just zoom right past you thru the intersection. There are two lanes but people make it into four. You drive along with bicycles, motorcycles (no helmets, 2 or 3 people, babies, dogs all on for the ride) and everyone drives so fast! Much horn honking.

The people here are very friendly and smartly dressed. I feel safer walking these streets than in Victoria. The streets and buildings are basically a shambles yet there will be a beautiful building amongst them. The roads and sidewalks are breaking apart and full of holes so occasionally you have to walk on the street. There's construction going on in every block. Very narrow streets. Our hotel is beautiful, great service, the food is really good. The weather is hot, probably around 30 and quite humid. The language barrier can be a bit of a problem. Mostly it's like playing charades and the locals just look at you with that 'deer in the headlites' look. We asked for a toilet plunger and they brought us an iron and then a bathtub stopper. Eventually they figured it out.
We found the local Wal-Mart and stocked up on water. Kelly and I have found an outdoor shopping mall 1 block away. The guys are going to the practice site today so we'll probably do some shopping and see some local sites. I'll keep you posted on the days events!

Hi Robyn

Found your Blog site. Sounds like your first couple of days have been fun. I know what you mean about the traffic. It was the same as DR. I think the words we use were "Hit to Pass".
